Marketing your products is the biggest challenging task in front of the farmers. Especially the less educated farmers do not get as much income as they should have after full production. In the absence of marketing, they are forced to sell their products at throwaway prices. To overcome this problem, Siddharth Sancheti, a resident of Pali district of Rajasthan has taken an initiative. In the last 10 years, he has created a network of 40 thousand farmers across the country. They market the products of the farmers. They have customers in India as well as in 25 countries of the world. With this, they are doing business of 50 crores every year.
Got a job offer in Australia, but returned to India
Siddhartha, 35, did his early studies in Pali district. After that he went to Bangalore. There he completed his graduation from computer application. After this, he worked in a multinational company for a year. Then left the job and went to Australia. After completing his Masters in 2009, he got an offer to work, but Siddhartha returned to India.
Siddharth says that after coming to India, I decided that instead of doing a job, I should start some work of my own, so that other people can also get employment. After much deliberation, he planned to start organic farming.
Never did farming, no one in the family used to do farming.
Siddhartha had no interest in agriculture before. There was no relation with farming in the family. Father was involved in mining work. In this sense, it was a completely new field for him. First of all, Siddharth did research on organic farming. Met the farmers, understood the process of farming. Collected information about different crops and their marketing.
Siddharth says that very few people knew about organic farming then. Most of the farmers were not even interested in it. Despite not getting any benefit in traditional farming, he did not want to leave it. He was afraid of loss in organic farming. That’s why it was necessary to train them along with motivating them. So that they can understand its process.
Started business at a cost of three lakh rupees
In the year 2009, Siddharth started his business from Pali district. He registered a company called Agronics Food and started working closely with local farmers. Initially, the cost of about Rs 3 lakh came to him.
Siddharth says that he was getting support from home regarding money, but he kept the budget low. They wanted to move slowly with a low budget. Instead of buying the land himself, he tied up with the farmers. Trained some farmers, provided them with resources and started cultivating spices.
Siddhartha had to struggle for the first three years. From marketing to production, he had to face many problems. After that he got the certification of organic farming. After that the pace of his business accelerated.
They started buying their products from the farmers and sending them to the market. Due to this the farmers also started making good profits and Siddharth’s work also started moving forward. Farmers joined them one after the other.
How do they work, what is their business model?
Siddharth says that we give training to the farmers first. Tell them about the process. They are advised to plant crops according to the season and region. If they don’t have the resources, we provide them too. Farmers grow crops on their land. When the crop is ripe and ready, we buy their product from them. We pay them more money than the market rate
After collecting the product from the farmers, we bring it to our unit. At present we have units in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Here the work of quality testing, processing and packing of that product is done. After that it is marketed. At present, more than 40 thousand farmers are associated with Siddharth. These farmers belong to many states of the country including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana.
